Ott. & Phutureprimitive kick off their tour with new releases.

Download Ott.’s latest single “Adrift in Hilbert Space” from his upcoming album “Mir,” due out Tuesday March 15th on Bandcamp. Phutureprimitive is also set to release his sophomore LP Kinetik on the 15th via his own imprint, Native Harmonix.  This long awaited album is his first full-length to follow up his iconic 2004 debut Sub Conscious.  On Kinetik Phutureprimitive explores a heavier, bass-centric sound that adds raw energy to the meticulously detailed tracks this trusted producer is so well known for.  In support of this release, Phutureprimitive embarks on a 24-show tour across North America with fellow sonic mastermind Ott.

re: music

Posted Wednesday, February 23rd

“Music is “an artistic form of auditory communication incorporating instrumental or vocal tones in a structured and continuous manner..” and a musical instrument is “any of various devices or contrivances that can be used to produce musical tones or sounds..” So a laptop is technically an instrument.. < Where i’m at lately > as long as an artist is genuinely creating and shaping their own message (i.e. making records), i’ll give them just as much respect as a jazz-trained piano player. Yes i think a traditional live band hosts more potential energy but let’s not say that dubstep and other software-generated sounds are not music. It’s taken me 13 years to learn my current vocabulary on the bass guitar, and to compare a 4-string guitar’s possibilities to a laptop is ridiculous. Let’s keep in mind that technology has opened the doors to many artists who would’ve never had the chance to speak up, and while that’s good, the art’s integrity could be compromised..We can all tell when someone is truly expressing themselves and when someone has no idea what’s coming next.. Let’s all be stewards of good music. If you’re feelin’ it, turn it up, share it, and support it.”

LA might get all the shine for the burgeoning beat scene, but a few states over in Colorado, producer Alex B (a.k.a. Alex Botwin) has been quietly setting up an abstract, instrumental fiefdom of his own. (That’s why we recently tapped him to host the Denver edition of our ongoing City Guide series for XLR8R TV.) As head of Elm and Oak, which functions as a record label, design shop, and clothing line, Botwin’s talents aren’t limited to just beatmaking, although his debut album, Moments, certainly garnered plenty of attention when it dropped earlier this year. Next week, he’ll be setting off on a massive US tour—check the litany of dates here—and as a little preview, he’s assembled this exclusive mix for the XLR8R podcast. It’s a layered, at times psychedelic, journey through hip-hop beats, dubstep brawn, and bedroom-studio skronk that nicely showcases Botwin’s talents; as it happens, he either produced or remixed half the songs here. Throw in some unreleased gems from like-minded beat producers, and this podcast is poised to get any beat freak salivating.
