Psychedelic Stereo Tour w/ Mimosa feat. Epcot + NastyNasty + Spankalicious + Mowahk vs. Heezy

Psychedelic Stereo Tour w/ Mimosa feat. Epcot + NastyNasty + Spankalicious + Mowahk vs. Heezy

Mimosa takes listeners on a journey through warm rhythmic sound-scapes, with melodies and vocal samples smoothly crafted to help navigate the sonic terrain. Using basslines inspired by hip-hop classics like Too Short and Dr Dre, combined with deep psychedelic textures reminiscent of the downtempo and midtempo output by Tipper and Bluetech, Mimosa blends the range of styles to create his own fresh take on the west coast sound. Mimosa’s debut EP release, Hostilis, presents tracks with heavy-hitting low frequencies, sexy grooves, and uplifting dub infusions, floating between instrumental Hip Hop and Dubstep. The Hostilis EP also features prolific MC Souleye from Colorado, known for his extensive touring with jam bands like BLVD and STS9. The track ‘Framboise’ features beautiful vocal textures provided by Canadian artist Sasha [Butterfly] Rose.

Andreas Kapsalis & Goran Ivanovic Duo

Andreas Kapsalis & Goran Ivanovic Duo

The Andreas Kapsalis & Goran Ivanovic Guitar Duo are a guitar duo that not only celebrate the tradition of guitar performance of the old and the current rapport but also as composers they are a part of a movement in the states who’s aim is to build the new repertoire for the next generation of guitar players. As they continue to create “buzz” throughout global music circles, these masterful musicians are also creating genres & musical styles that have yet to be named.

“Combining the sounds of steel- and nylon-string acoustic guitars in a stew seasoned with multifinger attacks, percussive beats, and heavy Serbian and Greek influences, Kapsalis and Ivanovic have created one tasty experimental dish. From the opening ostinato of “Shadow Thief,” the record sounds huge. Throughout, Kapsalis’s two-handed steel-string parts frequently create the illusion of three guitars instead of two. It gets even better on “Vertigo,” where his dizzying eight-finger nubs do justice to the song’s title. Ivanovic is no slouch on the nylon, either, wringing out lithe melodic lines throughout.”

Emancipator + J Public + LDude

Emancipator + J Public + LDude

To some, it must seem like this young electronic producer came out of nowhere this year. Emancipator played his first live show in July 2009, opening for Bonobo at the Roseland Theater (cap. 1500). Since then, he’s toured with Bassnectar, STS9, Pretty Lights, drawn crowds at festivals like Trinumeral and Symbiosis, and closed out Sound Tribe Sector 9’s late night parties in Denver at the request of the band. But those in the know have been following Emancipator since he self-released his first album, Soon It Will Be Cold Enough, at the age of 19 in 2006. His agile melodies layered over headnodic, immaculately-produced beats captivated fans across the internet and across the world. “Soon It Will Be Cold Enough” was picked up by Japanese super-producer Nujabes, pressed in Japan and sold 5,000 copies in the first six months. Emancipator landed a Puma sponsorship, gave an interview to Rolling Stone Japan, discovered one of his songs was played at the Beijing Olympics (still trying to figure out how that happened) and his song “Shook,” a mashup that perfectly mixes Mobb Deep’s mighty raps with a haunting track from the Icelandic band Sigur Ros, become the highest-rated song on Hype Machine’s “Best 50 Songs of 2007,” and appeared on Hype Machine as the #2 most popular song in April 2009.

His latest album “Safe In The Steep Cliffs” blends new instrumentation and organic samples with the signature Emancipator style of clean production, silky melodies and addictive drums. Dense layers of choirs, horns, American folk instruments such as the banjo and mandolin, violin and some distinct Asian influences make for a playful but refined album built out of intricate tracks listeners can enjoy on as many levels as they want. Dance to it, chill out to it, immerse your mind in it.

Opening the night will be J. Public and LDude (Hip-Hop, Dub Reggae, Skwee).

Fareed Haque & Flat Earth Ensemble + Elastik Soul

Fareed Haque & Flat Earth Ensemble + Elastik Soul

Led by world famous jazz guitarist Fareed Haque, Flat Earth Ensemble captivates audiences with a free flowing combination of every imaginable type of music – anywhere from blues to jazz to Indian classical music. Perfect keys work from Willerm Delisfort rival Haque’s virtuosity while Subrata Bhattacharya supports the whole band with only a set of tabla drums. At their Loyal Earth performance last year, the audience truly witnessed a moment of magic when, as the band broke into a slow blues, a festivalgoer with a harmonica began to play along in the audience; eventually he hopped onstage, grabbed a mic and proceeded to wail on the harp! The band rolled with it and the audience went nuts; it’s not every day you get to see something that special. Don’t miss Fareed’s return to 2720!

Elastik Soul is a modern jazz and funk band from St. Louis, MO. The group started out in the Spring of 2006 led by Pete Lombardo as a trio consisting of guitar, bass, and drums, but quickly evolved. Chris Stevenson was added in the winter of 2007 and the group took on a new sound with a heavier soul jazz influence. Since then the group has continued to grow and develop a style all its own.

The Bitter Tears + The Columbines

The Bitter Tears + The ColumbinesThe Bitter Tears + The ColumbinesThe Bitter Tears + The Columbines

The Bitter Tears (Chicago, IL)
Their songs are obtuse and catchy. Their stage show is uncomfortably fun. If you don’t want songs crashing around like curious slobs in your head, The Bitter Tears could ruin your night. Crafting an assault of absurd lyrical undertones, The Bitter Tears started as a country and western band but broadened out into other genres, blending different kinds of pop (country, folk, rock, brass band) while flying by the seat of their pants with whatever direction a song happened to be moving. Scalpone elaborates, “Our major initial influence was Kurt Weill. Weill bastardized many genres, wrote his own orchestral arrangements, and with Bertolt Brecht’s lyrics, created a wild combination of darkness, raunchy comedy and acerbic social satire. It’s great ‘cause it’s not some intellectual thing; it comes from the guts. Your liver knows when you’ve written a good song.”

Taken hold by Alan Scalpone (vocals, guitar, brass, woodwinds), Michael McGinley (vocals, bass, brass, strings), Bill Borton (drums), John Leonard (piano) and Greg Norman (vocals, guitar, trombone), The Bitter Tears will release their second album, Jam Tarts in the Jakehouse, on Carrot Top Records on March 3, 2009.

The Columbines arrived with a splash, riding a flaming wicker bunny that fell from the sky into the icy waters of Lake Michigan. They play songs about love, songs about anger, songs about angry love and lovely anger, songs with birds, bees, cars, trains, and planes, songs about the devil you know and the devil you don’t.

LATE NIGHT w/ Break Science feat. Adam Deitch + Virtual Boy + more

LATE NIGHT w/ Break Science feat. Adam Deitch + Virtual Boy + moreLATE NIGHT w/ Break Science feat. Adam Deitch + Virtual Boy + moreLATE NIGHT w/ Break Science feat. Adam Deitch + Virtual Boy + more

Loyal Family, 4Sho, and Connector our proud to present LATE NIGHT @ The Koken Art Factory with two of the country’s best experimental hip-hop duos, Break Science feat. Adam Deitch and Virtual Boy!

Break Science is the culmination of a career of beat bending by its brainchild, Adam Deitch. Whether performing a DJ set with drums / programming or helming a live band, Beat Science is club music in the vein of a “live mix tape,” blending live trip-hop, broken-beat, dub, drum & bass and hip-hop. The live band features some of the most talented musicians on the New York scene today (sidemen and producers the Fugees, G-Unit, Matisyahu and more). Guests have included luminaries such as Wyclef, Matisyahu, Rob Swift of the Executioners and Talib Kweli.

Adam Deitch is the son of two professional funk drummers, first picking up sticks at the age of two. Adam’s career crosses genres but has focused on hip-hop, funk and jazz, where he’s played the role of both drummer and producer. Inspired by hip-hop at an early age – in particular, by Public Enemy and Eric B and Rakim – Adam began his production career by making loops on a tape deck in his bedroom. He’s gone on to produce tracks for some of today’s top emcees, including 50-Cent, Redman, Talib Kweli, Snoop Dogg, KRS-One, MF Doom, J-Live, Jurassic 5 and Immortal Technic.

Hot-wiring naughty synth lines and dancefloor-crushing beats with elegant harmonic textures and twisted, pop-cultured hooks, Virtual Boy crafts a grimy, cinematic sound all their own. But even before Virtual Boy had an official release, taste-making DJs spanning packed clubs to BBC Radio were spinning their atmospheric bangers, which owe as much to Bach and Mozart as they do to Justice, evoking Air as much as Virtual Boy’s heroes-in-glitch Nosaj Thing and The Glitch Mob.

That stylishly oddball set of influences is what happens when two talented young classical musicians discover their shared passion for dusty vintage synthesizers, new electronic-music genres, classic formal wear, and girls that look like they are starring in a ‘60s Godard movie. Out of that distinctive crucible, Virtual Boy was born – the duo taking its distinctive moniker from a rare Nintendo game console gathering dust in a Southern California dorm room..

The Northwoods + Annie & The BeeKeepers

The Northwoods + Annie & The BeeKeepersThe Northwoods + Annie & The BeeKeepers

The Northwoods (St. Louis, MO)
The sound and soul of The Northwoods is both familiar yet new. Listen carefully and you will hear echoes of Simon and Garfunkel, Crosby, Stills, Nash, and James Taylor as they collide with the 21st century. Elijah Palnik and Jeremy Shanas are taking American music in a new direction. The Northwoods restore the beauty of poetry to its rightful place in today’s music through rich, soulful vocal harmonies and an occasional dose of funky, percussive rhythms.

“They sing about a hope surrounding life and an optimism that never dies, not even with youth. Shanas and Palnik are bringing a force and vitality to folk music that hasn’t been heard in decades.”
- Presentense.org

Drawing on the sounds of Joni Mitchell, Gillian Welch, Bob Dylan, and CSNY, Annie and the Beekeepers is a folk and country inspired trio that met at Berklee College of Music in December 2006. When Annie Lynch (lead vocal, guitar), Ken Woodward (upright bass), and Alexandra Spalding (cello, vocals) first began playing together in living rooms and basements around Boston, the mysterious disappearance of bee colonies throughout the world was receiving a great deal of attention in the media. As the group built the foundations of their band in coffeehouses and clubs around the Northeast, the collapse of the bee colonies fascinated them and inspired their name. The Bee has long been a symbol for hard work and community, and the Beekeepers were inspired to preserve and promote those same qualities by way of music and their role in the music community.

VHS or BETA DeeJays

VHS or BETA DeeJays

VHS or Beta is a band that combines elements of rock, French house and dance-punk. Their self-released debut Le Funk found some success on the charts, but the band became better known in the wake of their 2004 release Night on Fire. In early 2007, after two and half years of touring, the band made the trek to Asheville, NC to record 2007’s Bring on the Comets. Released in August 2007 Bring On The Comets marked a slight change in direction towards a more straightforward pop sound; all this was achieved without sacrificing the band’s trademark dance sensibility.

Full Moon Freakout w/ Woodhands

Full Moon Freakout w/ Woodhands

Dan Werb and Paul Banwatt, alongside producer Roger Leavens, are Woodhands — a synth and drums duo intent on injecting the world of electro-pop with a dose of emotional intensity and a generous portion of glam rock swagger.

Known for their vivid live performances, free from the calculable presence of pre-recorded samples, laptops or other safety nets so aptly found in so many of their contemporaries, Woodhands compiles original dance tracks that rise forth from the pain of their own blood, sweat and tears. This innovative two-piece rely on monstrous drum patterns, speedy keytar licks, and punk rock lyricism guaranteed to overheat any room with a threshold of sound and complexity.

Since the 2008 release of their debut album Heart Attack, Woodhands has received impressive accolades for both their recorded work and their relentless live performance, appearing on several ‘Best Of’ lists including a recent anointment as one of the ‘10 Best New Bands On Earth’ by British tastemaker Q Magazine following their coverage of SXSW 2009.

After spending the past year and a half touring Canada, the United States, China, and Japan in support of Heart Attack, and delivering a slew of remixes and cover songs that have kept the party going strong, Woodhands is back with a stimulating plethora of darker, energetic dance tracks. The forthcoming sophomore offering from Woodhands, Remorsecapade, dives deeper into the emotional territory of Heart Attack, painting strangely compelling portraits of lost souls inhabiting the late night abyss of dance clubs (“I Should Have Gone With My Friends”), sweaty hand-holding (“Pockets”), and – of course – heartbreak, here described as ‘doubling’. The songs of Remorsecapade run from the deceptive bubble gum pop arrangement of “Dissembler” to the explosive punk rock/electro hybrid of “Coolchazine,” and throughout, Woodhands offers listeners a rich journey throughout the scorched landscape of what their sweaty brand of electronic has now become: Risky, emotionally resonant, and dangerously addictive.

Shpongle + TomFoolery + J. Public

Shpongle + TomFoolery + J. Public

“Dongle and Mongle are the only two other words rhyming with Shpongle…a strange hybrid of electronic manipulation and shamanic midgets with frozen digits squeezing the envelope and crawling through the doors of perception, find a new pair of dice…extra numbers and colours an infinite expanding bubble, filled with a bizzare, strange world of dripping halucinatory wallpaper, a garden of earthly delights………..Shpongleland…..a place of well being, and reflective surfaces, morphing like an Anacondas skin and shimmering like a million colour changing squid, at fifty fathoms.. truly unfathomable like separating water from it’s wetness, the Ineffable Mysteries unweave..”

The core members of Shpongle are Simon Posford and Raja Ram from United Kingdom, along with many collaborators and guest musicians. Ott is also credited on all albums. Their Shpongle sound is a mix of mainly eastern ethnic samples and western contemporary psychedelic synth music. Posford is responsible for the synth and studio work while Raja Ram contributes with flute arrangements. They are both responsible for the visionary input. According to one interview, they commonly visualize the music together before and during the creation process.

TomFoolery
From the beaches of Miami to the forests of Hawaii, and any number of fields, forests, clubs, barns and warehouses in between, TomFoolery can be found delivering chunky cuts of breaks to the masses. The sound of TomFoolery is expressed as breakbeat music with a conscious intent of healing and mind expansion. As founder of CatalyticSouls, TomFoolery aided in the forming of a collective with the mission of “evolving conciousness.” CatalyticSouls has hosted a myriad of events unifying people in the positive vibrations of music including the famed UnderGround Sound series. TomFoolery’s music has been heard on internet radio, terrestrial radio, cd, and via download around the world. He is steadily ranked in the top 5 breaks DJs in the world and as the #1 Acid Breaks by the DJ List, leading him to become the go to guy for cutting edge breaks sets in the U.S.
